Tackling the Challenge of American Health Coverage
Foundations deserve tremendous credit for helping millions of families in America obtain basic access to health care. It started with children. Soon after Senators Hatch (R-UT) and Kennedy (D-MA) passed the Children’s Health Insurance Program in 1997, foundations across America helped policymakers develop and implement innovative strategies to enroll eligible children.

Suicide in Older Adults: A Quiet Epidemic
There is a widespread and dangerous popular misconception that permeates our society that aging and despair—and even depression—go hand in hand. One of the most drastic consequences of such marginalization is the resultant isolation and feelings of burdensomeness that, when exacerbated with key risk factors, may drive suicide in older adults.

Policies for Those Who Care: Investing in Systems that Support Family Caregivers
“We know that health and well-being are influenced by factors such as race/ethnicity, place, and socio-economic status long before individuals enter a doctor’s office. For that reason, much of our work aims to address social factors that influence health through the integration and coordination of care and services. By supporting integration, we aim to provide individuals and families with the full range of resources and supports that they need to thrive.”

Remembering Catherine McDermott
Catherine McDermott, who was the founding president and CEO of GIH, died in September, in Larchmont, NY. She was 80 years old. Catherine was a foundation liaison officer at the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation when the idea of creating a professional association for health foundations and corporate giving programs was first developed by Terrence Keenan and others. She served as GIH’s president and CEO until 1998, when she was succeeded by Dr. Lauren LeRoy. Subsequently, Catherine was president, CEO, and board member of the National Committee for Quality Health Care, and later served on several committees and advisory organizations.
