Petition for an ACEP Section of Membership

I, the undersigned, petition ACEP to establish a section for Emergency Medicine Locum Tenens or members interested in this practice option.

The Board of Directors has established annual section dues at $40 per section for regular members. Medical students, emergency medicine resident members and individuals in fellowship training programs receive free membership in the Young Physicians Section, may join another section of their choice for free and join additional sections for only $20 each.

I, the undersigned, realize that by filling out this form, I am indicating my intent to become a dues-paying member of the Emergency Medicine Locum Tenens section in addition to my regular ACEP dues.

The ACEP Bylaws require 100 or more College members to petition the Board of Directors to form a section.

Prospective Section Objectives

  • Compile and create resources for traveling physicians
  • Provide resources for stress management particular to the needs of Locum Tenens
  • Assist with maintenance of certification due to different state requirements for CME and encourage reciprocity between multiple states to streamline credentialing process
  • Opportunity to share experiences in a column "tales from the road" stories of Locums daily lives
  • Develop and compile resources for family members
  • Work with the Section on International Emergency Medicine about international options for Locums
  • Provide travel resource management assistance, such as information about points plans, miles, credit cards, etc.
  • Provide resources with regards to financial challenges, including per diem, taxes and working in multiple states
  • Share resources on communication skills development
  • Share resources on time management skills development
  • Assistance with maintenance of hospital certifications and credentialing
  • Compile and share the relative advantages/disadvantages of different employment models, such as independent contractor versus employee

Subject Area

The practice of Emergency Medicine is unique in that doctors may travel with relative ease to different sites. This sort of frequent travel poses challenges not addressed in other sections.

Furthering the College

The establishment of an Emergency Medicine Locum Tenens section will provide networking opportunities and a home within ACEP for those who find it difficult to maintain close ties to their home chapters. Additionally, the mobility of locums physicians may alert the College to developing problems and may help provide insight into solutions others have tried.

Proposed First Year Activities

  • Create a Section website, e-list and Facebook page
  • Establish other pathways for communication between members
  • Assemble leadership team
  • Assemble information regarding financial considerations for locums physicians
  • Draft articles addressing above objectives
