Recently, some collisions have occurred at night at the corner near the Noordkasteel Bridge. Ships pass this bend along the starboard side when sailing from the Fifth Port Dock to the Amerika Dock. The incidents were mainly caused by the difficult location of the corner in relation to the bridge and the limited lighting.
Consultations with the inland navigation industry yielded two solutions:
- A trio of flashing lights surrounding the corner to attract attention
- A permanent no-go zone (or danger zone) before the corner on the iENC charts of the port area.
Meanwhile, some lights have been installed in a test installation. Once these have received a positive evaluation by the inland navigation sector, the lights will be permanently installed. The persons responsible for the iENC charts are currently designing the danger zone and will take the next steps soon.
